Question

This is about the reaction between acetic acid and an unknown alcohol with heat and an acid catalyst.

r esterification has limitations because it rarely will convert 100 % of the starting you could use that 1. The Fishe product. Give an alternative reaction (ie, not Fisher conditions) should give 100 % conversio acid, and acid common, otherwise you better have a reference. n to the ester product. Note: do not just use an alcohol. carboxytie catalyst. Again- if necessary, search the internet - be sure the procedure enriched with 170 e out the chemical reaction for this experiment - as if you had an alcohol that was atoms in the alcohol. Be sure to account for all atoms. 3. Analysis by NMR during a reaction can be difficult because of the number of molecules If a small aliquot of the reaction mixture in this experiment were taken and added to Cl, to run an NMR, what can you say about the following information: triplet around 4.10 ppm integrates for 3 triplet around 3.75 ppm integrates for 2 singlets around 2.10 ppm integrate for a total of 7.5 CDCI to other peaks irrelevant... n the format of ratio of alcoo:estr acid, state the molar equivalents of these compounds 2 5 :NA (ie, there's 3 molecules of ester for every ex. molecule of alcohol but you can't tell how much acid remains) If you need to, use the chart at the back - specifically, look at ethyl acetate and try to learn from this what information can be gathered

Explanation / Answer

Answer for question 1

R'OH + CH3COOH + CH3COCl =   CH3COOR'

This reaction will give 100% yield, as in the presence of CH3COCl (used as catalyst) , reaction is irreversible.

In case of Fischer esterification, reaction is revesible.

Answer for question 2

R'O17H + CH3COOH +  CH3COCl =   CH3COO17R' + H2O
