Question

ProbIem 21.78 When clothes are removed from a dryer, a 41g sock is stuck to a sweater, even with the sock clinging to the sweater?s underside. Part A Estimate the minimum attractive force between the sock and the sweater. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. Then estimate the minimum charge on the sock and the sweater. Assume the charging came entirely from the sock rubbing against the sweater so that they have equal and opposite charges, and approximate the sweater as a flat sheet of uniform charge of area O.13m^2 . Express your answer to one significant figure and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

a) has to resist gravity

so F = m g = 41.0E-3*9.81= 0.4 N

b) so E from sweater = sigma/(2 e0), sigma = Q/A

F = q E

0.4 = Q^2/(2 e0 A)

0.4 = Q^2/(2*8.85E-12*0.13)

Q = sqrt(0.4*(2*8.85E-12*0.13))= 9.6E-7 C
