Question
A future space station is designed to have a radius of 1800 meters. In order to simulate gravity, the station has to spin around its center.
a) What must be the tangential speed of the space station in order to have centripetal acceleration of 9.8 m/s^2?
b) What is the period of the rotation? t=?
We have only spent less than half a lecture on 2D and 3D motion. I'm sure the professor will cover it move before our test but I want to study this more. We haven't covered anything like this so far. Help please. I don't know how to approach this one.
Explanation / Answer
a.,.apply tan accleration a = v^2/R
so speed v^2 = gR = 9.8 *1800
v^2 = 17640
v = 132.8 m/s
----------------------------------
appply V = 2piR/T
so Time T = 2piR/V
T = (2*3.14* 1800/132.8)
T = 85.12 secs or 1 min 25 secs
