Question

EE499 homework 10 Problem 5 A radar has a beamwidth of 1 degree. The resolution volume (shown in the figure) is located 100 km from the radar. If the rainfall intensity is 1 raindrop per cm3 at that range and the diameter of a drop is 1 mm. 1. How many raindrops are contained within the resolution volume? 2. What is volume of water contained in the resolution volume? 3. If the diameter of raindrop is increased to 4 mm and there are 100 drops per m3, what is the volume of water contained in the resolution volume? 150 m 010 1 degree beamwidth 100 km

Explanation / Answer

Answer :- The outer radius, Rout = 100*cos(0.50) km = 99.99619 km = 99996.19 m.
The inner radius, Rin = (100-0.15)*cos(0.50) km = 99.846198 km = 99846.198 m.

Thus the resolution volume, Vres = {(1/3)*3.14*(Rout)2 * 100000} - {(1/3)*3.14*(Rin)2 * 99850} m3 = 4706037235.360672 m3 .

1) Now each cm3 has one rain drop, so each m3 will have 106 rain drops. Thus within the resolution volume, the number of rain drops = 4706037235.360672 x 106 = 4.70603 x 1015 raindrops.

2) Volume of water in one drop = (4/3)*3.14*(0.5x10-3)3 m3 = 0.523333 x 10-9 m3 . Thus volume of water contained in resolution volume is, Vwater = 4.70603 x 1015 x 0.52333 x 10-9 = 2.463 x 106 m3 .

3) Can be solved as 1 & 2.
