Question

At least 200 wprds please Task 4 LAB 4 (LO P4.1 M,1) Pre Lab Scenario: At a farm a plc Is currently used to control an irrigation system in one of the green houses. They are looking to install anther controlled irrigation system, but looking at alternatives to PL using PIC s and other micro-controllers. You suggest that this is possible these other control devices. Research PICs, embedded and micro controllers, as an alternative to the PLC for the scenario above and evaluate their effectiveness and other factors compare to PLC. Write a short comparative essay (200-300 words). Please produce references for your sources of information. 1.

Explanation / Answer

The comparative writing is given below:

The word PLC stands for Programmable Logic Controller. Simply put forward, it' a rugged computer that is used for industrial application and mainly industrial automation. Often various controller and sensors are attached to the PLC and with the help of these controllers, some portion of a production or in the best case, the entire production line can be automated.

PIC on the other hand is a microcontroller which has been developed in 1993. This microcontroller is controlled by software and like PLC it can perform tasks of industrial automation. PIC microcontroller is based on RISC architecture.

PLC On the other hand is like a gigantic microcontroller and in many ways it's much more advanced compared to PIC. The main advantages are:

1. There are various input output ports attached to PLC which connects PLC to the rest of the machine where the Cpu process the program data.

2. Another important advantage In PLC like systems is that there are large variety of communication ports are connected so that the processed data can be exported to other devices.

3. Last but not the least, most of the Plcs are programmed using C programming which is much easy to use compared to the assembly language programming.
