Question

Consider a current loop that has ts normal {the normal to plane of the loop) in the x-y pane (as shown in figure a). A magnetic field B is in the x-direction as shown. The angle given on the figures is the angle Between the normal to the plane of the loop and the magnetic field B {so the angle between the magnetic moment and the field), for all the cases, find the direction of the torque and direction of rotation. Which of the cases a-g yields the largest torque on the loop? Which yields the smallest torque?

Explanation / Answer

Torque=mBsin(theta)

Now;

a)

T=mBsin(-90)=-mB

b)

T=mBsin(-90)=-(sqrt(3)/2)mB

c)

T=mBsin(-30)=-mB/2

d)

T=mBsin(0)=0

e)

T=mBsin(30)=mB/2

f)

T=mBsin(60)=(sqrt(3)/2)mB

g)

T=mBsin(90)=mB

Now we can easily see that the highest magnitude of torque will be acting in the case (a) & (g)

and lowest magnitude in the case (d)................... keep in mind i am talking about the magnitude of the torque.................
