Question
Can you explain this in detail? using Equilibrium properties and using Le Chatelier principles
3. (5pts) A student made a miraculous discovery and said a hydrate of cobalt (II) chloride changes color as a result of the presence of water vapor, as shown in the reaction below. Is the student correct, does the compound change to pink color indicating moist air? Or is the student wrong because the equilibrium doesn't change because water has no effect on the equilibrium? [Co(OH2)6Cl2(s)% [Co(OH2)4]Cl2 + 2 H2O (g) Pink BlueExplanation / Answer
here water is used in equlibrium expression because it is in gas phase so changing the concentration of water will affect the equlibrium and equlibrium will shift in a particular direction to readjust the equlibrium state.
according to le-chatelier principle, on increasing the concentration of product, reaction goes in backward direction to re-establish equlibrium. in above reaction water is present in product side so aon adding moist air, (i.e. on increasing the concetration of water), reaction will go in backward direction and blue color will start to change in pink color.
so yes student was right. compound change in pink color indicating more moist air.
