Question

Problem C A spaceship in distress sends out two escape pods in opposite directions. One travels at a speed v1 = 0.54c in one direction, and the other travels at a speed v2 the spaceship. What speed does the first escape pod measure for the second escape pod? 0.79c in the other direction, as observed from Problem D In a nuclear reaction two identical particles are created, traveling in opposite directions. If the speed of each particle is 0.74c, relative to the laboratory frame of reference, what is one particle's speed relative to the other particle? Xc

Explanation / Answer

given v1 = 0.54 c

v2 = 0.79 c

speed of the second pod with respect to the first is

V = [ v1 + v2 ] / [ 1+ ( v1* v2)/c^2]

= [1.33 c ] / [1+ 0.4266 ]

= 0.932 c
