Question
In Part A, you measured the conductivity of several dry and wet solids. observed in the conductivity of dry NaCI, wet NaCI and a NaCI solution. Explain the trend you Explain the trend you observed in the conductivity of deionized water, tap water, bottled distilled water, and bottled drinking water. You measured the conductivities of solutions of NaCI, MgCla, and NasPO, all having the same concentration. Why were the measured conductivities different? Overall, which were the best conductors among solids and the best conductors among the liquids?Explanation / Answer
Answer 1: We observe that NaCl has higher conductivity when it is in solution or liquid form, than in solid form. This is because in solution, Na and Cl ions are free to move, which is not the case with solid state.
Answer 2: Tap water has conductivity higher than any of deionised water, distilled water or drinking bottled water. Tap water has highest conductivity because it has lots of ions that help conduct electricity. Distilled water has ions supposedly removed so it can't conduct well.
Answer 3: Magnesium Chloride has highest conductivity, followed by Sodium Chloride and Sodium Phospahte. It is so because when ionised, Mg gives 2+ ions while Na gives 1+ ion. The higher the number of ions, the more the conductivity.
Answer 4: Among liquids, MgCl2 was the best conductor and among solids, metals were the best conductor.
Answer 5: General statement: " Ionic compounds have greater conductivity than molecular compounds".
Answer 6:"If an aqeous solution has high electric conductivity then it has high number of ions." is true.
Answer 7:
Electrical conductivity is the ability of a material to carry the flow of an electric current (a flow of electrons). For example, let us imagine that there is water collected around an electric pole, and that there is current flowing from pole to water. Jose, who was on his way to school, saw a dog was going to enjoy the splash of water. but on the very yesterday, his physics teacher taught them that water is a good conductor of water. Keeping that in mind, he saved the dog from being electricuted. So knowing conductivity and other electric properties of materials, we can use them accordingly.
Answer 8: knowing the electrical properties of certain materials, we can avoid hazardous steps while working with electric components or using such materials in lab solutions. these type of materials have some electrolytic properties. for example, while repairing an high tension electric line, the technician ensure that he wears gloves which are nade up of rubber or any other material which has very small electric conductivity. Also, while working in our electronics lab, our lab instructor ensure that all the wires used are coated with insulating rubber coating. This way, it is really important to know the conductivity of materials.
