Question
Object O1 is 16.0 cm to the left of a converging lens with a 11.3-cm focal length. A second lens is positioned 10.0 cm to the right of the first lens and is observed to form a virtual image at the position of the original object O1.
Please help with Part B!
(a) What is the focal length of the second lens? -13.6 Correct: Your answer is correct.
(b) What is the overall magnification of this system? 5.04 AND 2.63 Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect.
(c) What is the nature (i.e., real or virtual, upright or inverted) of the final image? virtual and upright Correct: Your answer is correct.
Explanation / Answer
(A) for first lens,
f1 = 11.3 cm
object distance, p1 = 16 cm
1/f1 = 1/p1 + 1/q1
q1 = 38.5 cm
this image will work as object for second lens,
p2 = 10 - 38.5 = - 28.5 cm
image distance, q2 = - (10 + 16) = - 26 cm
1/f = 1/p + 1/q
f = - 13.6 cm
(b) m = m1 m2 = (-q1/p1)(-q2/p2)
m = (38.5 / 16) (-26/-28.5)
m = + 2.20
(C) Virtul, Upright
