Question

A student set up the magnetic optical bench as shown. The locations of the component holders for the crossed arrow target (CAT), lens (L), and screen (S) are as follows, respectively: 27.8 cm, 52.6 cm, and 86.2 cm. The offsets for the CAT and the S are 3.0 mm, and the offset for L is 6.0 mm. (a) Calculate the focal length of the lens. (b) If the object size is 1.5 cm, what is the size of the image? (c) Is the image inverted or upright? mm3m 3 cm 3 rn o3cm D CAT LS 7.8cm Bench (side view) 0.0 cm 100.0 cm component holder

Explanation / Answer

object distance (u)= (52.6- 27.8) cm= 24.8cm

image distance (v)=(86.2-52.6)cm= 33.6cm

a)hence focal length of convex lense as shown in figure (1/f)= (1/u) + (1/v)

=(1/24.8) + (1/33.6) =(58.4/833.28)

(f)=(833.28/58.4) cm = 14.26 cm

b) magnification of lense = (image distance/ object distance)= (size of image/ size of object)

=> (33.6 cm/24.8cm) = (size of image / 1.5 cm)

=> size of image = (1.35 )* (1.5 cm)= 2. 079 cm

c) image produced will be inverted
