Question

A system of two converging lenses forms an image of an arrow as shown. The first lens is located at x0 and has a focal length of f 11.7 cm. The second lens is located at x = x2-64.2 cm and has a focal length of f2 = 22.2 cm. The tip of the object arrow is located at (x,y)(Xo,yo)-17.6 cm, 7.3 cm) 1) What is x, the x co-ordinate of image of the arrow formed by the first lens? Explanation / Answer

1) f1 = 11.7 cm

p1 = 17.6 cm

1/f = 1/p + 1/q

1/11.7 = 1/17.6 + 1/q

q1 = 34.9 cm

x1 = 34.9 cm

2) m = -q1/p1 = hi / ho

-34.9 / 17.6 = y / 7.3

y1 = -14.5 cm

3) for lens 2,

f2 = 22.2 cm

p2 = 64.2 - 34.9 = 29.3 cm

1/22.2 = 1/29.3 + 1/q2

q2 = 91.6 cm

x3 = 64.2 + q2 = 155.8 cm

4) m = - q2 / p2 = y2 / y1

- 91.6 / 29.3 = y2 / (--14.5)

y2 = 45.3 cm
