Question

Humans are the main cause for the animal extinction due to the ever increasing demand for animal products as proportionate to the increasing population and needs. Due to the requirement of more space, we (meaning people) are destroying the habitats of the animals. World life organizations should be properly maintained. Specifying the ethical principles that they believe should guide conservationists. They give a prominent place to increasing human wealth and working with corporations. While recognition of the right of other species to continue to flourish is nowhere to be found. Humans are the ultimate weed species. Habitat changes by reducing biotic integrity, population fragmentation, habitat destruction, inbreeding depression catastrophic events, environmental variability are destroying the balance of nature, so species should be saved and they have the inherent right.

At what point then, do we stop putting the needs of other species over the needs of our own? Do we save some species of moth in place of a village than needs access to clean water only found in that moth's habitat?

Explanation / Answer

Although extinctions are a normal part of evolution, human modifications to the planet in the last few centuries, have greatly accelerated the rate at which extinctions occur - accelerated human population growth and expanded scope of agriculture. The most important causal anthropogenic activities are habitat destruction, overexploitation, pollution and the introduction of alien species to an environment

Animal extinction caused by anthropogenic activities is not just about the right of those animals to share the planet Earth, the extinction of any species has a disastrous effect on the future living species as well. Because of the web of life, each species has a connection with all the others around it. The loss of one species can upset the balance of its environment and affect biodiversity ; the food web is disturbed - if the prey species is extinct, the predator species too may extinct, eventually effecting the entire ecosystem either directly or indirectly.

Many conservation organisations have cropped up to save the planet Earth from mass extinctions. IUCN(International Union for Conservation of Nature) publishes a Red List providing information about the degree of extinction and conservation status of animal and plant species.

It is already a high point to stop putting our needs over the needs of other species till there is a balance in the BioDiversity. But human sustenance is dependant on dominating other species. To the question, to what point do we stop putting the needs of other species above others :: It is not possible at the current situation to completely give priority only to other species, so any kind of developmental approach must include sustainablity. Sustainable development approach keeps in view the needs of other species as well.  In the situation where there is a dilemma whether to invade the moth's habitat for clean drinking water :: harmony may be the solution, where the villages donot over exploit the water resources or pollute it and try not to disturb the living conditions for the moth.

Global unity is the need of the hour, efforts must be directed towards sensitivisation of people towards other species, clean technological innovation and sustainable development.
