Question

A 607 g block is released from rest at height ho above a vertical spring with spring constant k 430 N/m and negligible mass. The block sticks to the spring and momentarily stops after compressing the spring 16.8 cm. How much work is done (a) by the block on the spring and (b) by the spring on the block? (c) What is the value of ho? (d) If the block were released from height 6ho above the spring, what would be the maximum compression of the spring? (a) Number (b) Number (c) Number (d) Number Units Units Units Units

Explanation / Answer

a] Work done by the block on the spring = work done by gravity = change in potential energy

so, W = mgho

b] Work done by the spring on the block = change in elastic potential energy

W' = (1/2)kx2 = (1/2)430(0.168)2 = 6.068 J

c] From conservation of energy, the change in potential energy = change in elastic potential energy at the bottom when the block has stopped.

6.068 = mgho

=> ho = 1.02 m

d] mgh = (1/2)kx2

0.607(9.8)(6 x 1.02) = (1/2)(430)x2

=> x = 0.4115 m = 41.15cm.

this would be the maximum compression in the spring if h = 6ho.
