Book: physics for scientists and engineers 4th edition knight

For the statement below, write your answer in the box on the left. Explain your answer in the space below the statement. (You may use words, equations and/or diagrams to explain.) (1.1) The figure shows three identical lightbulbs connected to a battery having a constant voltage across its terminals. What happens to the brightness of lightbulb 1 when the switch S is closed? Explain (A) The brightness will increase momentarily then return to its previous level. (B) The brightness increases permanently. (C) The brightness will decrease momentarily then (Q The brightness will decrease momentarily then return to its previous level (E) The brightness decreases permanently.

Explanation / Answer

When you close switch S, then overall resistance of circuit decreases and hence current supply by battery increases. The current supply by battery is equal to current through bulb 1. So power( P= I^2*R) of bulb 1 increases. Since brightness depends upon power i.e greater the power brighter will be bulb. So brightness increases when switch is closed . So answer is B)
