Question

A Municipal wastewater-treatment plant receives a seasonal discharge from a fruit processing plant. Influent flows are strengths of the water when the industry is both on- and off-line are given below. Determing the contribution of each constituent by the industry.
Parameter                  industry on-line                  Industry off-line

Flow m3/d                      18,750                                 13,275

Bod5 mg/L                        300                                       215

SS, mg/L                           420                                        240

Ammonia Mg/L                   64                                         15

Chloride mg/L                     29                                         41

Alkalinity mg/L                     57                                       125

Explanation / Answer

The contribution of each constituent by the industry is equal to the difference between Industry on-line and Industry off-line.

(i)

Contribution of Flow in m^/d = 18750 - 13275

                                             = 5475

(ii)

Contribution of BOD5 in mg/L = 300 - 215

                                                = 85

(iii)

Contribution of SS in mg/L = 420 - 240

                                           = 180

(iv)

Contribution of Ammonia in mg/L = 64 - 15

                                                     = 49

(v)

Contribution of chloride in mg/L = 29 - 41

                                                  = - ve number

As the contribution can't be negative, it can be concluded that the contribution of chloride in mg/L is equal to zero.

(vi)

Contribution of alkalinity in mg/L = 57 - 125

                                                  = - ve number

As the contribution can't be negative, it can be concluded that the contribution of alkalinity in mg/L is equal to zero.
