Question

. If an energy resource cannot be found in Cambria province, what would it take (politically, economically, and infrastructure) to bring or use that resource to/in Cambria province. Record the environmental impacts that may be associated with transporting that energy resource to Cambria province.

Hydroelectric Power

The factors needed to determine the ideal location of a hydroelectric dam include the topography, a canyon that can be dammed, and an area to make a reservoir upstream of the dam. Zoom in to where the streams start in the mountainous areas (light green or white). Hydroelectric power requires a power plant at the dam site and access to the grid for power distribution.

Describe the most suitable location in Cambria province to build a hydroelectric power plant. (Note criteria listed above)

Does the electrical grid exist near Cambria proposed plant location?

What is required to develop hydroelectric energy? (For example, building facilities).

What are the benefits of using hydroelectric energy?

What are the environmental impacts of using hydroelectric energy?

Tidal Energy

The factors needed to determine the ideal shore location of a tidal power plant include a large tidal range and a funnel shaped shoreline pointing inland. Tidal power requires a power plant at the coast and access to the grid for power distribution.

Describe the most suitable location in Cambria province to build a tidal power plant. (Note criteria listed above)

Explanation / Answer

answer 1- the factor affecting the selection the sites for hydrielectric dam are following-

- the good topographical location along the path of river , the best location along the path of river is river canyon or the location where the river is narrowing.

- geological structure that should be stable and resit to earthquake and should not allow the seepage of water and it should be waterproof.

- sufficient water is available

answer 4- the following thing is required for develop hydroelectric energy-

- sufficient amount of water to create water reservior

- high relief topography and geological structure resist to earthquake

- varities of turbines that used at hydropower facilities depending on the amount of hydraulic head at plant

answer 5- the benefits of hydroelectric energy are folllowing-

- hydropower is fueled by water so it is clean fuel source, meaning it won't pollute air like power plant that burns fossil such as coal and natural gas.

-it is domestic source of energy, allowing each state to produce their own energy without being reliant on international fuel sources.

- the energy generated through hydropower relies on the water cycle, which is driven by the sun, making it renewable source, making it more reliable and affordable source than the fossil fuel that are rapidly being depleted.

- Impoundment hydropower creates that offers a variety of recreational opportunities, notably by fishing, swimming and boating.

- In addition to sustainable fuel source, hydropower efforts produce a number of benefits such as flood control, irigation and water supply.

answer 6- Environmental impact of hydroelectric power are following-

In land Use- the size of reservior created by hydroelctric project can vary widely, depending largely on the size of hydroelectric generators and topography of land. Hydroelectric plants in flat area required more area than those in hilly areas or canyons where deeper reservoirs can hold more volume of water in a smaller space. Flooding land for a hydroelectric reservoir has an extremely environmental impact: it destroys forest, wildlife habitat , agricultural land, and scenic land.

In Wildlife Impact- hydroelectrtic facilities can still have major imapct on aquatic ecosystem. For example, through there are variety of methods of minimize the imapact (including fish ladders and are in take screens) fish and other animals can be injured and killed by turbine blades. Reservoir water is more stagnant than the normal river water as result the reservoir will have the higher than the normal amounts sediments and nutrients which can cultivate the an access of algae and other aquatic weed. these weed can crawd out the other river animal and plant life and they must control by manual harvesting.

In Life cycle of Global warming emmission - global warming during the installation and dismantling of hydroelectic power plants but recent research suggest that emmisons during a facilty operations can also be significant. small run-of the- river plants emit between 0.0- 0.03 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents per kilowatt-hour. Estimates for life cycle global warming emission from hydroelectric plant builts in tropical areas or temperate peatland are much higher. after the area is flooded, the vegetation and soil in these area decomposes and release both carbon dioxide and methane.

answer 9 - requirement for generation of tidal energy-

the difference between flood tide and ebb tide must be minimally of the order of 4.6 meter or above that. the volume of water moving around the tide or the cubature of the tidal flow is an important factor that determine the suitablity of a site

answer 10- Benefits of tidal energy are following-

- A very predictable and inexhaustible source of energy.

- very low cost to operate,

- effective even at low tide speed

- can last forever

-completely green- there are no carbon emission from tidal energy plant, making it an energy source that does not negatively affect the global environment.

answer 11- Ennvironmental impact of tidal energy plants are following-

- no noise pollution. it do nt produce green house gases

- effect of marine life, mounting of turbines could greatly interrupt the habitats of marine life and also prevent the natual movement of the species.

-changes in the tidal movement.

- do not require any kind of fuel to run
