Question

Explain what type of the field QC samples should be used in the following cases:

(a)To know if a bailer is contaminated in the groundwater sampling.

(b)To know if airborne contaminants will be responsible for sample sontamination during shipment from and to the lab.

(c)To know if an error (trace contamination) could occur during the entire sampling operation, shipment, and handling.

(d)To know if any sample variation exists in the field.

(e)To compare if the soil pollution source is due to the atmospheric deposition of an upwind smelter.

Explanation / Answer

a) to know if a bailer is contaminated or not first the sampling and analysis should be done and should compare the field to the lab results. And the site conditions should also be known.

method blank: it is a process of sampling used to know the contamination.

b)Field blank: A field blank neads an uncontaminated reaent water which is free from analyte. This sample is prepared at the laboratory and taken to the sampling site and is opened to air and exposed to the sampling atmosphere and the sampling is collected and both the samples are brought to the laboratory for analysis.Hence can be known the airborne contaminants are present or not.

c)Trip blank: it is used.this sample is prepared in the laboratory with reagent water free of the analyte water and the blank is shipped along with the sampling containers to the feild and bring back to the laboratory without opening it for analysis. This type is used find any contaminations present in the sample during transportation and storage conditions.

d) To know if any sample variation is present in the field first we should know about the field environment and about the surroundings about geology and the wastes which are releasing at that area. Two samples are collected one is original and the other one is duplicate. Both the samples are analysed in the laboratory, so that the variations that exists in the analysis process or field sample can be known.

e) Soil pollution can be occured due to the atmospheric deposition. sampling is collected at cerain intervals of time ie duration of days. So that variations canbe seen in the sample analysis as some contaminants are dissolved due to the atmosphere changes.
