Question

parts used is 2 pieces of 5/16 inch diameter W1 drill rod approximately 6 inches long
one piece was placed in the furnace at 1000F for 20 mins
the other piece was placed was placed in the furnace at 1600F for 20mins.

Questions 1. Do you expect the parts heated to 1600 F (871 C) and quenched to be harderthan the parts beated to 1000 F (537 C) and quenched and why? 2. Did the parts beatedto 1600 F (871 C)and quenched become barderthan the parts heated to 1000F (33 C) and quenched? Ifnot, why not? and quenchied become barder than the parts heated to 1000F (337

Explanation / Answer

1.Yes, Quenching is a hardening process where material is heated up at elevated temp.with desired physical properties and cooled down abruptly to room temp. In case of Iron , Larger temp. range allows more Martensitinc (RC 65) Transformation of Austenite (Gamma) and therefore material heated to 1600 F is more harder than 1000 F. .However Quenching is always followed by Tempering to reduce the hardness and brittleness of material .
