Question

Show the relationships between organism size, organism mobility, and population biomass as we move up through a trophic pyramid or trophic web. Use a simple sketch or statement to explain why these differences occur. Draw three sketches (equatorial, midlatitude, polar) showing the relationship between insolation, productivity, and consumer/predator populations. Sketch the relationship between ocean layering (thermocline/halocline), upwelling/downwelling, and changes in productivity and consumer/predator populations -why might ocean circulation and layering lead to "unexpected" productivity characteristics?

Explanation / Answer

The population biomass decreases as we move up a trophic pyramid or Web. As the upper level in a pyramid is dependent on lower level for food , the population biomass of lower level need to be greater than the levels above.

The organism size generally increases on moving up a pyramid as the predator need to be more powerful and bigger than its prey . But generally the body size of producers is greater than their consumers.

The mobility of the organism of higher level is more than that of the lower level as predator need to move greater distance and fadter to than it's prey .

The ocean layering like thermocline or halocline causes barrier for the movement of various substance and nutrients between the surface water and deeper water .where as upwelling and downwelling creates movement of nutrients between surface layer and deeper layer inside the water body.

The availability of nutrients , carbon dioxide other gases and changes in surrounding greatly affect the productivity of marine producer. Thus ocean layering etc widely influences the productivity . Consumer population mainly depends on the producers and its productivity thereby depends on layering .

The insolation ocean current and temperature varies from equatorial region to that of polar region .the surface water is hotter than deep water in Equatorial region .and the suface water is colder than the lower layers in polar region.
