This Pierce County park was once the site of the Steilacoom Quarry, where millions of tons of gravel were quarryed over the past century. It's now been landscaped into a golf course and park. 1) Why was there so much gravel here? How can the presence of gravel deposits ehre be related to the broader story of glacial activity in the region?

2) Gravel is a critical commodity in industrial society. What's it used for?

3) Gravel and sand is almost always deposited under water. How can you explain why this gravel deposit is largely above water now?

Explanation / Answer

1.Due to warming and cooling activity of earth ice sheets covered Washington and retreated.Vast on phase was glacial retreat and advance which gave sand to this region.It left sand at Chambers bay very thick sand .To north of steilacoom glacier left very deep sand and garvel.Gravel was of very fine quality ideal for concrete production .Pierce county had large deposit of gravel.

2.Gravel has many uses in building industry .It is used for laying roads and foundations ,cement strength addition.
