New Careers in Science

[1]     Ideas once considered science fiction are quickly becoming part of our everyday world. From robots that vacuum to revolutionizing computer technology at the molecular level to analyzing pollutant dispersion, science is changing faster than the speed of light.

[2]     In order to keep up with this high-speed change, specially trained scientists are needed. New technologies mean new careers, and college programs are quickly emerging to prepare students for the new world of scientific technology in the workplace. The following career opportunity descriptions illustrate just a few of the current and future needs in science:

Wanted: Robotics Scientist

[3]     Description: The responsibilities for this position include growing and maintaining mammal cell cultures using a high throughput screening (HTS) program. The robotics scientist will use robotic mechanisms to transfer cells to 384 well plates for analysis.

[4]     The robotics scientist will also manage advanced automation. This requires extensive computer data storage and knowledge of sensors and cameras. The scientist will also manage inventory for the cell culture facility using robotic transfer mechanisms. The bone and joint research studies are performed using biological testing, specialized instrumentation, and robotic mechanisms.

Wanted: Nanotechnology Assistant

[5]    Description: Do you relish a challenge and wish to have an impact in a new and growing industry? Eastern Nanotechnologies is a modern and well-funded early-stage nanotechnology company that builds small electronic devices and circuits using atoms and molecules. We are looking for research scientists, nanotechnology assistants, and program managers to help develop new applications for nanomaterials. Our primary goal is to develop cost-efficient products that offer the improved strength and heat-resistance of thermoplastics.

[6]     Responsibilities: As a nanotechnology assistant, you will support research scientists in developing materials at the atomic and molecular levels. Knowledge of research protocols, nanotechnology, and thermoplastics is essential.

     Salary: $58,000/year with excellent benefits

Wanted: Atmospheric Scientist

Company: Air Solutions
Salary: Based on experience

[7]     Description: Air Solutions is seeking candidates who are using experimental, observational (ground-, air-, and space-based), and/or numerical methods to study aerosol processes. This position requires the ability to study and report the impact of aerosols on the hydrologic cycle, including cloud formation and precipitation. Specifically, Air Solutions is measuring the impact of aerosols on croplands and forests.

What Next?

[8]     These sample job descriptions are just the beginning. Other careers in science will include working on advances in genomics (the study of the structure of chromosomes), robotics use in everyday life and technology, worldwide immunology, and much more. Careers in science are bound to multiply as our urgent need for knowledge, convenience, and growth continues.
