Module 06 Discussion - Schizophrenia from Patient's Point of View

Think about a client with schizophrenia that you know about from personal, work or clinical experience, or from news media or other sources. Describe the individual.

What are the positive and/or negative symptoms?

What are the person's struggles? What treatments have been tried and failed? What works?

If you were that person, what would you like to tell your nurse about yourself, your needs, and your fears?

Please provide evidence from professional sources to support your information. Include examples of your prior experience with a client who was having a problem with delusions and/or hallucinations.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that occurs in adolescence or early adulthood, charecterised by Delusion, Hallucination,Cognitive difficulties and may persist lifelong

A client in my clinical experience was diagnosed with Schizophrenia , initially the client resisted that there is no problem and refusing for any treatment. But as the days and month proceeded this client experienced behavioural changes ,faced difficulties to do daily activities ,tried to health educate and start treatment

Positive symptoms includes sleeping disorder, anxiety, depressed mood, difficulty concentrating, suicidal thoughts, disorganised speech, deludion, hallucination

Negative symptoms include certain things taken away from the individual like lack of motivation,no facial expression

Struggles faced by the client:

The client displayed false belief, delusion of persecution, delusion of grandeour, hearing odd voices, jumps from one subject to other, lost the interest in work, withdrew from the family ,unaware of the disease, communication becames difficult

Treatment:

Medication (Anti Pychotic drug) .helped the client to be relaxed for a period of time

Psychological counseling .helped the client initially but in later stage it was difficult

Self help resource

If I was the person , i would request the nurse to explain all the posibilities to sort the problem, and minimize the symptoms

A client with this disease was admitted at inpatient department ,on the day 1 the client was talking normally , answering to all the questions, but the client was literally scared of seeing a rope on the road , thinking as a snake .
