Explanation / Answer

Answer for q 5: The vitamin that caused flushing and liver damage is is vitamin B3 niacin. This vitamin helps to lower LDL and triglycerides and increase HDL. It is used for treating high cholesterol levels. Niacin is got from dietary sources like poultry, meat, fish, egg and greens. The side effects are flushing, upset stomach, diarrhea, liver and kidney diseases. The upper limit (UL) for niacin in adults is 16mg/day for men and 14mg/day for females. Maximum intake is 35mg/day.

Answer for q 6: Anemia is a condition where there is lack of healthy red blood cells. The vitamins that causes anemia are folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin C. Vitamin B12 is responsible for her change in mental status. She might be taking folic acid which has hid her deficiency from showing up in the lab reports.

Answer for q 7: The patient is having a condition called pellagra. It is caused due to the deficiency of vitamin B3 niacin. The signs and symptoms are rough skin on areas that were exposed to sun. Grains and meat items are rich in niacin.

Answer for q 8: The patient has Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome. It is caused by deficiency of vitamin B1 - thiamine and alcohol intake. Chronic alcohol intake can cause this condition due to depletion of thiamine, reduced enzyme activity, inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption of thiamine and impaired utilization by the body.
