Question
6. THINK IT THROUGH You work for a public health organ- ization and have been asked to educate the public about bisphenol A and to suggest ways to minimize exposure to the chemical. You begin by examining your lifestyle and finding ways to use alternatives to BPA-containing products. Create a list of five ways you are exposed daily to bisphenol A, and then list approaches that would avoid or minimize these exposures. Do these steps require more time and/or money? What are some costs of embracing these changes? What would you tell an interested person about bisphenol A as it relates to human health?Explanation / Answer
Bisphenol A is an organic synthetic compound belonging to the group of diphenylmethane derivatives.
Human being are exposed daily to bisphenol A via:
1. Water and infant bottles
2. Compact discs/ toys
3. Food cans
4. Water supply pipes
5. Food and beverages
Prevention of exposure:
* don't microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers
* plastics that are marked with recycle code 3 or 7 may be made with BPA avoid it.
* reduce the use of canned foods
* opt for glass, porcelain or Stainless Steel containers particularly for hot food or liquid
* use BPA free baby bottles
The benefits of removing BPA could potentially outweigh the costs of a potentially safe alternative. And it is difficult and time consuming to force something off the market.
Embracing these changes will benefit:
1. Helps with maintaining healthy blood pressure levels
2. Healthier lifestyle in an effort to avoid diabetes and heart disease
3. Healthy brain and free from mental issues
4. Avoids cancer of different origin
Bisphenol A is not hazardous at low levels..as the exposure increases risk of health problems also increases
