Question

Amy has been on a moderate fluid restriction diet for her “heart condition” for a long time, but recently she has been getting worse. Her feet are swollen, and she put on 4 lb of “water weight”. During her last doctor’s visit, she was advised to lower her fluid intake even more: from 30 ml/kg of body weight to 25 ml/kg.

She has all this fluid restriction all figured out from previous recommendations. How much (in fluid ounces) does she need to cut her fluid intake? Amy is 5’4” and her regular weight, when not swollen, is 127 pounds.

Explanation / Answer

Amy's body weight in kilograms :

1 pound = 0.454kg

127pound = 57.60 kgs

Amy's fluid restriction is 25ml/ kg

1ml= 0.0338 US fluid ounce

25ml/kg means 1440ml for 57.60 lbs of fluid

Hence, 1440ml = 48.69 US fluid ounce.

A normal adult women recommend fluid intake is 2700ml so as per doctors advice Amy should cut down 1260 ml of fluid intake per day that is 42.60 US fluid ounce.
