Explanation / Answer

Recommend procedure for transferring blood from a syringe into vaccum tube.

Transferring of blood from the patient to the vacuum or vacutainer is done to send the blood samples for investigation and evaluation purpose. The procedure for withdrawing blood is called as phlebotomy meaning incision into a vein with a needle ( phleb - blood vessel, otomy - opening). It can also be called as venipuncture procedure.

This procedure can be performed using a syringe and container as well as vaccum tubes. A needle of 21 gauge or smaller is used for this purpose to allow easy and speedy blood collection with minimal hemolysis. After insertion of needle either the plunger can be pulled to withdraw blood or a modified needle can be connected to the vaccum tubes so that with desired negative pressure only the specific amount of blood will be collected.

Parts and function of syringe system

Syringe system consist of syringe and needle which can be used for injecting or withdrawing or instilling medication in liquid form or withdrawing samples from body cavities and regions. It consist of two parts 1. Barrel and piston 2. Needle.

1. Barrel and piston

The piston also called as plunger is located as a movable device inside the barrel which is tightly fixed which helps in to withdraw or push content inside the barrel. It is often covered with a rubber component to work efficiently.

The barrel is the component wherein the content is collected. It is calliberated with markings in tenths to make precise measurement of the quantity of fluid to be removed or injected. The end of the barrel which is tapered and a site of insertion for the needle is also called as Hub. It can be simple hub with tightly fit needle or with spiral lock system tightly fitting the needle called as Luer lock. The barrel can also consist of finger flange located at the end of the barrel wherein plunger is inserted for providing ease in holding the barrel while injecting or withdrawing.

2. Needle consist of Needle adapter, needle hub, shaft and bevel. Needle adapter is to fit into the hub of the sryinge for transfer of medication into the needle. Needle hub is the junction between needle adapter and shaft. Shaft is the long mettalic part of the needle which varies in length and diameter according to different gauge of needle. Bevel is the opening of the needle which is sharp and transversely cut for easy insertion into the blood vessel.

There are various pre-filled syringes as well for single time use.
