Question

See Hint You’ve decided to rent an apartment with your friends. Your parents will cover your portion of the rent up to $250 (but not any additional expenses). Your monthly share of the rent will depend on the number of roommates. The table below shows the costs associated with the number of bedrooms in the apartment. Assume one person per bedroom. Number of bedrooms Rent Cable/Internet 1 $400 $60 2 $600 $60 3 $750 $60 4 $900 $60 Which of the following size apartments can you rent so that your parents pay the entire portion of your rent? Choose one or more: A. one bedroom B. two bedrooms C. three bedrooms D. four bedrooms Suppose you and your friends decide to rent the four-bedroom apartment and subscribe to cable. The average fixed cost per roommate will be $ . If only three people moved into the four-bedroom apartment, the average fixed cost of rent and cable will be $ , which means that you will have to pay $ of just the rent on your own.

Explanation / Answer

Answer

Parents will pay upto $250 so the child can either choose to stay in a three bedroom flat as it will cost

750$/3 = $250 ( Exactly the amount) or four bedroom that will be $900/4 = $225. As these amounts lie in the budget that was upto $250.

OPTION C & D.

2. Now suppose we choose four bedroom flat with cable that will be 4 - $900+$60 + $960

and this whole amount will be divided by four.

Therefore , 960/4 = 240 $

The average fixed cost per roomate will be $240.

3. The total cost associated with four bedroom flat as calculated above is $960 ($900+$60).

Now rather than sharing amond four only three people are sharing that room. So, $960/3 = $320.

The average fixed cost per roomate will be $320 if only three people are sharing that room.

Excluding the cable the rent was $900 which is being divided among three - $900/3 = $300

And as parents are paying $250. Thus he need to pay 300-250 = $50 on his own.
