Question

Dalman and Lei have decided to meet a venture capital group in New York to discuss the possibility of internal expansion of Sandwich Blitz, Inc., and to find out if acceptable financing can be arranged. Dalman has always been the one who could voice the Sandwich Blitz vision. He has usually been the visible “voice” for the company while Lei has usually worked behind the scenes to handle financial matters. They are both worried in this situation. Dalman is afraid that he lacks the financial background to satisfy these financiers. Lei is afraid that she might not have the marketing skills needed to convince this group of the unique capabilities of Sandwich Blitz.

Explanation / Answer

In my opinion the situation at hand calls for a leader not a manager. One of the main differences between leaders and managers is vision. Managers tend to focus on the right now, getting imediate tasks done. Where leaders focus more on the future and how to get there. Depending on personal styles, people follow managers because they have to,but they follow leaders because they want to. Leaders posses a quality that most managers do not, the ability to present their vision in a way that inspires others. The dilema Dalman and Lei are facing is easily solved by using the lateral leadership style. Since they share the same vision for the company and each possess the knowledge the other is lacking, Dalman is strong in marketing and Lei has the finacial knowledge, both should present their joint vision for Sandwich Blitz to the venture capital group.
