Chapter 1 The Evolution of Nursing
1. The Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820. During the Crimean war, She improved the unsanitary condition and saved the lives of soldiers from the infectious disease. She is the founder of modern Nursing and established the first Nursing philosophy based on the health maintenance and restoration. Her views on nursing developed and reflected on the changing needs of the society. She played the role of nursing based on her knowledge and developed a program for the training nurses. During the nineteenth century, she brought about major changes in sanitation, hygiene, nursing practice, and reduced mortality rate.
2. In the United States, Nurse practice Acts regulate the licensure and practice of Nursing. Each state defines its scope of nursing practice, but most of them have similar acts. Most states defined the scope of Nursing practice based on the Nursing practice represented by ANA. It can be revised based on the growing autonomy and expanded roles of nursing practice. According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, a Licensed practical nurse or Registered Nurse must pass NCLEX-RN examination. State Board of Nursing establishes legal and ethical guidelines in accordance with the Federal Government.
3. Health promotion is the process of empowering individuals and the communities to have healthy lifestyle activities and behavior and thereby reducing the risk of chronic diseases. For example, some of the health promotion activities of nurses are health assessment, screening program, promotion of good nutrition and implement of exercise program.
Disease prevention is the specific effort taken to reduce the development and severity of the chronic diseases. Wellness is related to both health promotion and disease prevention. Some of the prevention activities are immunization program, motivate people to avoid diabetes, obesity.
4. Holistic Health Care:
Holistic health care is the comprehensive health care of the individuals such as physically, emotionally, socially, economically, and spiritually in response to illness and to meet the basic needs. Holistic Healthcare regards and treats the mind-body-spirit of the client. It is based on the philosophy of living. Holistic nursing encourages the nurses to implement holistic healing in the clinical practice.
5. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs:
It is the basic human needs that are necessary for human survival and health. Certain basic needs are more important than others. It provides a basis for the nursing client in healthcare settings. The nurse should focus on the client's needs. For the effective care, the nurse must understand the relationship between different needs and determine the priority based on the individual needs.
