Personal values expresses what worths to you the most. It frames your likes and dislikes. Values gives clarity in life and helps to build self awareness. It serves as a guide and helps to make intelligent decisions at times. Every individual possess some values which briefs their character outline like foe example the great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi who struggled in their life as they valued freedom the most in their life. The values are never stationary elements. It tends to change with ones life experiences, professional experiences or any big happening in life. As a nurse, my value system that was framed in my chilhood changed with the passage of time and my personal experiences. In childhood I always valued the concept of loving and being loved, freedom. Due to the financial crisis in my family my value about love change as I explored love is a feeling which is significant in life in every relationship, in every action but this love will not earn your bread. I valued freedom also a lot,but when I found for a girl, freedom to outside world is a chance to use her,exploit her and to define her character, I slowly began to value independence but with security.
In the healthcare setting, my values have being driven by my spiritual beliefs. The concept of service to mankind is service to God, paved a way in framing my decision to become a nurse. Guided by the value of respect, honesty, love and care, discipline,accountability, I have completed my nine years in the field of clinical nursing. These values have always helped me to take correct decision at correct time. These values combined helped me to deliver a quality nursing care. Caring for patients without any discrimations of caste, religion, sex, age,gender and other diversities proved me that I valued respect. Earlier it was a belief that doctors are the most integral part of a healthcare services but when I entered nursing career, I discovered that my opinion about the health care policy is utterly different. Nurses play a pivotal role in delivering care and is the backbone of a health care setting.
But in some instances, our values do not cooperate or go hand in hand with the health care policy. Some of the health care policy requires to show care and support more towards the financially healthy patients. Some political forces and superiors interupt our decision making using their political power and influence. It develops a bias in the mind of nurses who have to make unethical decisions at times. Our values gives as courage to stand against injustice and to fight for patients rights. For example: A health policy aims to provide care to the patient who can afford their financial expenses. A patient who is brought gasping by a person who is just a helper in the situation. The hospital refuses to proceed with any efforts to improve his condition as the person who brought the patient do not have enough money to pay for his medical expenses. In such situation although the nurse values care and support but is forcefully stopped from caring the patient by the hospital management.
Spiritual belief are set of organized practices that is shared by a group of people. The spiritual belief are mainly centered at the existence of God, being the supreme power above everything. The spiritual beliefs are developed from childhood when a child watches his parents visiting churches or temples, performing certain rituals. Our values are also shaped by the spiritual belief of an individual. In health care setting, the spiritual belief of patients and the care providers effects the delivery of care. The care delivery system should value the religious beliefs of the patients and plan care accordingly. As a health care provider, my spiritual life has laid a great impact on my profession. As told earlier, the decision of choosing nursing itself is based on my spiritual belief. I have always placed God at the center of my every action especially while dealing with human lives. As per the scriptures, He is my healer who is alive and still can perform miracles. A kind and loving heart is a spiritual asset in me. A patient who is not known to you becomes so important that your emotions are effect by their pain and suffering. You began to feel you are accountable for the wellness. My heart sinks into great sorrow when a life is lost inspite of the numerous efforts made to save him/her. Praying to God before going for a day's work, before entering to the unit, before and while performing any procedures or treatment on patient all this is fostered by our spiritual beliefs.
But in many cases, the health policy demands to be more realistic in thoughts as it beliefs in scientific principles not on miracles. Example : A patient is in coma with life saving devices. The doctor says that nothing more can be done so better to allow him to go peacefully and permit them to remove his mechanical supports. The family is not ready to make such decision as they believe that God will perform miracle and his condition shall improve. This scenario can be seen in every health setting. The spiritual belief of an individual greatly effects their values and decisions about health care and treatment choices.
