Question
A 20 kg cart travelling to the right at 10 m/s collides head-on with a 10 kg cart travelling 6 m/s to the left After the collision, the 10 kg cart is travelling 8 m/s to the right, What is the velocity of the 20 kg cart after the collision? Determine whether or not the collision is elastic (Show your calculations), Discuss whether or not your answers to parts a) and b) are reasonable. Include specific reasons why you think the answers are or are not reasonable You must show all work, starting with the equations on the front page, to receive credit.Explanation / Answer
a) conserving momentum of the system
taking right as positive
20*10+(10*-6) = 10*8 +20*V
V = 3 m/sec ( towards right )
b) we know that coefficient of restitution
e = V2-V1/u1-u2
e = 8-3/10+6
e = 0.3125
e is not equal to one so inelastic collision
c) yes my answers are reasonable
as in inelastic collision energy is not conserved
during collision some energy is lost as heat
