Question
Nadia P. is the minister of tourism for a small West African country. This country has become a very popular winter destination for Scandinavians. The tourists seem to be mainly interested in the beaches, which are among the finest in the world. However, it is customary for these visitors to wear very scantly clothing, especially when swimming. In fact, nude swimming is occasionally practiced. About 90 percent of the indigenous population of the host country are Muslims. The appearance and sometimes behavior of the visitors, especially when shopping and otherwise contacting local citizens, often seem improper to their hosts. Tourism is increasing each year. The economic benefits are considerable and are very much needed. However, the social problem is becoming more acute. What should Ms. P do about this?
Explanation / Answer
Here there is clear sign of clash of values and civilizations
Ms P must keep in mind that any restrictions that are put on visitors would dampen the industry, Ms P however has a very difficult job in balancing both culture and economy,
Ms P must make sure that tourist beaches are made private, There are so many beaches that are private, Private beaches will allow only certain kind of people into the beaches this will almost reduce 90% of tensions,
The next solution is to educate both its own people and foreigners about traditions and try to find a balance between locals and foreigners, It is important to say to foreigners that beach is their playground but certainly streets are for the locals. This message will help both tourist and locals.
