Question

In a very busy off-campus eatery one chef sends a 213-g broccoli-tomato-pickle-onion-mushroom pizza sliding down the counter from left to right at 1.73 m/s. Almost simultaneously, the other chef launches a 327-g veggieburger-on-a-bun (with everything, but hold the horseradish) along the same counter from right to left at 2.23 m/s. The two delicacies collide head on at the given speeds–the counter is practically friction-free due to accumulated grease–and merge into a single, unbelievably savory serving. In what direction does the delectible dish move, if it moves at all?

A) To the left

B) Doesn't move

C) To the right

At what speed does it move? Enter a positive number.

Explanation / Answer

We will use momentum conservation for solving this problem.

Final Momentum = (m1 + m2) * v (final).

Initial momentum. Taking left to right as positive x axis.

We have Total Initial momentum = m1 ( +v1) + m2 (-v2) = 213*1.73 - 327* 2.23 = -360.72 gm m/s

So total final momentum is also negative i.e from right to left direction

-360.72 = (213+327) * vfinal

vfinal = - 0.668 m/s

So it moves from rigth to left (A) with 0.668 m/s
