A. Calculate the magnitude and direction (i.e., the angle with respect to the positive H-axis, measured positive as counter-clockwise) of the total force acting on M. Notice that the arrows representing the forces end on grid intersections.
Magnitude:

Direction:

B. When a fourth force is applied to the mass, it is observed that the velocity of the mass stops changing and remains constant. What are the horizontal and vertical components of that fourth force?
Horizontal:

Vertical:

Explanation / Answer

A.

Total force in x-direction
Fh = -10 + 70 + 40 = 100

Total force in y-direction
Fv = 40 + (-20) = 20

Resulting force:
magnitude = F = (100²+20²) = 101.98 N

Angle of resulting force:
direction => = arctan 20 / 100 = 11.30°

B.
4th force size must cancel F of part A. = -101.98 N
4th force direction must be 180° + = 191.30°
