Question

In this step, you assessed reasoning concerning what happens when some air is allowed to escape the cylinder. Which student's statement is most correct?

Student 1: In the ideal gas law, PV = nRT, the pressure is proportional to the number of moles of gas, so if you remove some gas, the pressure has to drop.

Student 2: The pressure is proportional to the number of moles of gas only if all the other quantities in the ideal gas law are held constant. In this case, both the number of moles and the volume decrease, so you can't decide about the pressure.

Student 3: You are right that there is not enough information to use the ideal gas law. But we can look at the free-body diagram. After we close the clamping valve again, the forces are the same as they were initially, and so the pressure must be the same as before.

Explanation / Answer

Student 3 is most correct
