Question

(3 points) Instead of following proper sun-care guidelines, you decide not to put sunscreen on for an entire day while you lay by the pool. As a result, your skin cells are exposed to harmful ultraviolet radiation which damages your DNA. The resulting damage to your DNA could not be repaired by DNA polymerase. Two different genes have thus mutated. Gene 1 has had a base substitution in a codon so that the original codon reading ACC now reads ACG. Gene 2 has had an insertion of two nucleotides (GC) between the U and A in the original codon UAA, so it now reads UGCAA. Discuss how these two reation for both Gene Gene 1 likely to be more or less severe than Gene 2. Why?

Explanation / Answer

The mutation in gene 1 is silent mutation because the substitution has occurred on the third base in codon ACC and third base change doesn't change the amino acid as it can make a pair by Wobble base pairing. Mutation in gene 2 is more severe as the mutation changed the stop codon to UGC and that is not a stop codon, so the protein made will be faulty as stop codon has changed to an amino acid codon.

So, gene 1 is likely to be less severe than gene 2 for above reasons.
