Anisomycin, is an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces griseolus which inhibits 95% of eukaryotic protein synthesis.
It is also used as a potential psychiatric drug and inhibits the consolidation of new context-specific long-term memories, as well as long time consolidated memories rendered labile through reactivation.
Injection of anisomycin into the hippocampus leads to selective removal of memories.
The motor cortex, or M1, is one the principal brain areas that is involved in motor function.? As anisomycin has no influence on motor functions, no effect of hte drug is seen on motor cortex function adn organization.
The hippocampus on the other hand plays an important role in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory, and in spatial memory that enables navigation.? Hence when the drug is directly injected in to the hippocampus, consolidation of memories are affected and results in amnesia in 48h after administering the drug.
