Question

How is a male Tortoise Shell cat carry the orange and black allelea( codominant) for coat color on their X chromosomes similar to a human male afflicted with Klinefelter's Syndrome? Use words and punnett square to prove. Explanation / Answer

In the cat, the genes which control the color of the fur is located on the X chromosome. The gene has two alleles:

1. codes for orange color fur = X B

2. codes for black color fur = Xb

Using Punnett square, the following genotypes are possible in case of female:

Thus, XBXB gives orange color fur, XbXb gives black color fur and XBXb gives patches of orange and black color fur, the condition called as Tortoiseshell.

As females have 2 X chromosomes but males have only one X chromosome which can carry only one allele either orange or black. In males, the Y chromosomes do not carry this allele thus is not responsible for fur color. There are two possibilities for normal male genotypes: XB Y gives orange color fur and Xb Y gives black color fur. A male cat similar to human male carries one X and one Y chromosomes. The X chromosome does not undergo inactivation and thus the coat color is determined by the X chromosomes.

A male tortoiseshell cat is rarely produced this condition is similar to the human as Klinefelter's syndrome. In this condition, an extra X chromosome is present that is XXY where inactivation of X chromosome takes place similar to the female cat. Using the Punnett square, the following genotypes are possible:

X0 is the inactivated X chromosome. XBXbY gives the rare case of the male having the tortoiseshell condition.

XB Xb XB XBXB XBXb Xb XBXb XbXb
