Question
A. Explain the difference in the expression of the Ubx gene in Drosophila an artemia.
B. Explain, how could gene duplication and the change in gene expression similar to
the Ubx gene have given rise to snakes that evolved from ancient lizard species?
Using a simple labeled drawing with captions to explain.
C. The narwhal is a pale-colored porpoise found in Arctic coastal waters. These animals have two special teeth. In males, the more prominent tooth grows into a spiral tusk up to 8.8 feet (2.7 meters) long and through the narwhal's upper lip. Do believe the evolution of the narwhal tusk is the result of “heterochrony” or the result of changes in a “homeotic” regulatory genes? Provide support for your choice and against the other. Provide a plausible explanation of how “gene regulation” would influence the development of the narwhale’s horn.
D. What are the chromosomal differences in humans and chimps that might contribute to differences in the development of the two separate species?
Explanation / Answer
D) Chimpanzee and humans have remarkable smilarities in their chromosomes. The basic difference comes in number of chromosomes, chimpanzees have 24 pairs ofchromosomes while humans have 23 pairs. Other difference arises due to inversion on chromosomes segment like inversions on human chromosomes mainly at 1,4, 5,9,12,15,6,17, 18. Other important genes which helps us in speech development (forkhead-boxP2 TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR) was also changed during human lineage.
