In an effort to be (or at least appear to be) socially responsible, many organizations donate money to philanthropic and charitable causes. In addition, many organizations ask their employees to make individual donations to these causes. Suppose you’re the manager of a work team, and you know that several of your employees can’t afford to pledge money right now because of personal or financial problems. You’ve also been told by your supervisor that the CEO has been known to check the list of individual contributors to see who is and is not “supporting these very important causes.”

Working together in a small group of three or four, answer the following questions:

1.How would you handle this situation?

2. What ethical guidelines might you suggest for individual and organizational contributions in such a situation?

3. Create a company policy statement that expresses your ethical guidelines.

Explanation / Answer

I firmly believe what employees do with their money is their business. Any Organization has to make sure they feel that way. Charity is great and worthy to support, but pressurising employees to donate to a charity is not that great. It could sour employee’s relationship with the organization. This, obviously, causes some resentment among employees, who are already dealing with low pay and no raises for a long time.

This situation may demotivate employees, so to handle this situation first thing we have to do is, stop pressurising employees to donate to a charity. Sending a group email, post something on a bulletin board, whatever is appropriate to inform them about the charity can be done.

But compulsion of participation should not be there and also not to mention who gave what.

Ethical guidelines for the organization are that organization has engaged employees, and philanthropy is an effective way to reach demographic. Build a culture around empowering employees to see opportunities and explore the most creative and effective ways to solve big challenges.

Employees have to create an understanding of their social responsibilities towards the locality they come from.

The company has to give a right to each and every individual to donate as per his/her wish.

The company should not mention who gave what, let employees contribute as per their wish and finical condition and matching those contributions can provide a nice incentive.

Create awareness among its employees for the caused before asking to donate.
