Question

Answer the question with thorough detail:

If we binge on leftover Easter candy, the excess glucose is converted to acetyl-CoA and used to synthesize fat. However, after a vigorous workout that depletes glucose from our glycogen stores, we need to eat carbohydrates to replenish glycogen. We cannot use carbons from fat to synthesize the needed glucose. Explain why we can make fat from sugar but cannot make sugar from fat, even though sugar synthesis (from oxaloacetate) and fat metabolism (to and from acetyl-CoA) are connected through the citric acid cycle.

Explanation / Answer

We can make sugar from fats also but in very few cases . Thats why after vigorous exercise for instant sugar we need to have carbohydrates..

The process of fatty acid catabolism leads to the formation of 2 carbon acetyl- CoA , whic hcan be utilised in the TCA cycle for generation of energy.

In fact, it is known that Ketone bodies, ?-hydroxybutyrate in particular, can be converted to glucose at least in small amounts (?-hydroxybutyrate to acetoacetate to acetone to propanediol to pyruvate to glucose). Glycerol, which is a part of the triacylglycerol molecule, can be used in gluconeogenesis. GLycerol is coverted to glycerol phosphate and then Di hydroxy acetone phosphate (DHAP), an interemediate step in Glycoslysis. In humans, gluconeogenesis is restricted to the liver and to a lesser extent the kidney.
