Question

5. Examine the picture below of separate agarose gels taken from three different primary journal articles. In all cases, virions were purified and lysed open in vitro to release the RNA genomes. These isolated genomes were then run out on a gel (shown below) to visualize the resulting banding pattern. (a) Using the figure, which virus isolate best represents what you would see upon examination of a rhinovirus? Explain your reasoning. [2 pts.] (b) Using the figure, which virus isolate best represents what you would see (c) Using the figure, which virus isolate best represents what you would see upon examination of a reovirus? Explain your reasoning. [2 pts.] upon examination of a bunyavirusExplain your reasoning. [2 pts.] Virus A Virus B Virus C top of gel bottom of gel

Explanation / Answer

These answers are to the best of my knowledge.

A) Virus B would be rhinovirus as this virus contains only one single stranded positive sense RNA genome and the gel is also having just a single band for single RNA molecule.

B) Virus A would better represent reovirus because they have segmented dsRNA genome and 7 bands are seen in the gel in this case only.

C)Virus C woul suit more for bunyavirus due to the tripartite genome of bunyaviruses meaning they have a genome consisting of 3 ssRNA molecules.
