What is the main reason that the Gymnosperms are considered more primitive than the 16 Angiosperms. 9. List three differences between the reproductive structures of the Gymnosperms and the 10. Why are Gymnosperms called "Naked Seed Plants?" CDr.iExplanation / Answer
Alternation of generation- It is a type of life cycle in the plants between a stage of gametophyte( group of cells which are haploid i.e with n chromosome) and a stage of sporophyte ( group of cells which are deploid with 2n chromosome). Mostly occurs in algae, ferns etc.
Gametophyte- Gametophytes are haploid multicellular organism containg n number of chromosome.
Sporophyte- They are Deploid multicellular organism containing 2n number of chromosomes in each cell.
Gametophytes produces haploid sex cells or gamates which joins together to form deploid zygote. This deploid zygote undergoes cell division to poduce multicellular sporophyte.
Xylem- Xylem is one type of transport tissue in plants which transports water and minerals from roots towards different plant parts. It is made up of two element Tracheids and vessel elements. The xylem cells are dead at maturity. It is present at the inner ring of the plant stem.
Phloem- Phloem is the transport tissue in plants which carries the products of photosynthesis from leaves to different parts of the plants. It is consists of Sieve tube and companion cells. Its cells are alive at maturity. It is present at the outer ring of the plant stem.
Rhizoids- Rhizoids are anchoring structures coming out of the lower epidermal cells of algae and bryophytes. These are very simple cellular structure.
Root- Root is a plant part which attaches to the ground to absorb water and nutrients.
Asexual Reproduction- Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction where an organism arise from a single parent by cell division and contains the genetic make up of that single parent with similar number of chromosmes. It does not involve fusion of gamates.
Sexual Reproduction- It is type of reproduction where two gamates (haploid) from two individuals ( male and female) with distinct characteristics or gene make up fuses together to form a zygote which by eventual cell division gives rise to a deploid individual.
Antheridium- It is the male sex organ of algae, fungi, conifers and different non flowering plants.
Archegonium- It is the female sex organ in algae fungi, conifers and different non-flowering plants.
Monocots- The flowering plants or angiosperms whose embryo only have one cotyledon or seed leaves.
Dicot- The flowering plants or angiosperms whose embryo have two cotyledons or seed leaves.
