Question
What's Killing the Chiiaren This show refers to a quote attributed to Great Britain's John Snow, often considered to be the father of epidemiology, which states: "Common things occur commonly. When you hear hoof beats, look for horses, not zebras." How does this relate to epidemiology? 1. 2. In this show William Foege states that we live in a global village. What does he mean by this 3. Why at this time in history is it important for an agency like CDC in Atlanta to become actively involved in solving medical problems in other countries? dependent on each other? public health system, receives a budget that is many times greater than that of CDC, CDC's former head James Mason suggests that this unbalanced allocation is due, in part, to the historical practice of giving treatment priority over prevention. Is this bias justified? Why or why not?Explanation / Answer
1. Epidemiology is the branch of medicine, which deals with the knowledge of the occurence and distribution of diseases among the people. The statement "common things occur commonly" is applicable to epidemiology very aptly, because when there is natural route or path or way or scope for some action to take place, it will take place so naturally or commonly and it will become a common thing. In the same manner, when there is a scope or natural route or chance for the occurence or distribution of a disease, that disease will occur or distribute so naturally or commonly. hence the statement "common things occur commonly" is highly apt for epidemiology.
2. Global village refers having no distinct boundaries of spread of people or movement of people across the world. In the present world, people, animals, other living things and non-living things are easily getting moved from one place to any other place of the world or globe like how a person can move from one corner of the village to the other corner of the same village very easily. So as the people and animals are moving across the world very easily, they can easily carry the disease causing organisms also with them, if they are at infectious disease. So if there is the occurence of an infectious disease at any other country also, it may spread to some other country very easily. So it is very important to solve or cure such infectious diseases or medical problems of other countries by CDC, so that in this global village those diseases will not spread from the affected countries to other unaffected countries.
3.Epidemiolgoy deals with the occurence and distribution of disease in the entire population, whereas the medicine deals with the treatment of a disease in a concerned individual, but not in the entire population. a clinician will be knowing the entire symptoms and methods of spread of a particular disease. This knowledge can be used by an epidemiologist to make his/her study about a particular disease in a given population. In this process of study the epidemiologist may come across newer information also, which can be utilized by the clinician to treat the patients in that particular disease.
4. The centres for disease control and prevention (CDC) is a federal agency. CDC conducts and supports the promotion of good health, prevention and preparedness among the people with the aim of improving the overall health of all of the people of US.
The NIH or National Institute of Health conducts biomedical and public health research. For biomedical research and public health research more funds are needed than for the promotion and/or prevention and preparedness which is conducted by CDC. Hence allotment of more funds to NIH activities is justifiable.
