Question

State your interpretation of these results (e.g., what conclusions can you draw from the results? Be careful not to restate your data. Summarize in 2 or 3 sentences.) 10. 11. What factors can influence the activity of a disinfectant? 12. Why do microorganisms differ in their response to disinfectants? 13. What microorganisms are most susceptible to disinfectants? Why? 14. Which microbial forms are most resistant to disinfectants? Why? 15. How can bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal disinfectants be distinguished? 16. Did you find the mouthwash you tested to be as effective as the other disinfectants included in this experiment? Explain any differences you observed using your data table. 17. Why are bacterial endospores a problem in the hospital environment? 18. Briefly discuss disinfection in relation to patient care.

Explanation / Answer

11. The factors influencing the activity of disinfectants are exposure time, the concentration of microorganisms present, pH for optimal activity, temparature, toxicity of agents to skin or on materials to be disinfected.

12. Because they attack specific targets in the cell which may not be present in a given microbe. Moreover, certain bacteria has enzymes which are capable of removing toxins from their membrane, making them resistant to disinfectants.

13. Gram positive bacteria are more susceptible as they are readily inactivated by disinfectant. Their thick peptidoglycan layer absorbs disinfectant which break this layer.

14. Bacterial endospores are most resistant to disinfectants due to its tough spore coat that acts like a sieve and prevents toxic substances to enter inside.

15.Bacteriocidal disinfectants are used to kill the microorganism by inhibiting the synthesis of cell wall whereas bacteriostatic disinfectants limit the growth and reproduction of microorganism by interfering with their protein synthesis, DNA replication or metabolism.

17.Bacterial endospores are highly resistant to external environment and can cause illness in patients who have already compromised immune systems in hospitals.

18. Disinfection leads to the destruction of harmful microbes present on equipments used in hospitals. If it is not done, then the patient has chances of contracting diseases susch as HIV. So, disinfection of hospital equipments is very important for atient's care.
