Question

Using the phylogenies shown below, for each group (A-E), describe whether that grouping is paraphyletic, polyphyletic, or monophyletic? C and E are obviously monophyletic, however, A B and D are difficult to distinguish because the groups are only labeled at the tips and do not show the ancestors included. If anyone can help explain why these 3 would be one or the other (para or poly) I would really appreciate it. Thank you!!

PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION

Group A Group D F Group B Group E Group C

Explanation / Answer

polyphyletic group of organisms is a group which does not share the immediate common ancestors. Organisms which shows similar characters but do not have common lineage are considered as a polyphyletic group.

paraphyletic group of organisms is a group with the immediate common ancestor excluding some of the subgroup.

monophyletic group of organisms is group which contain most recent common ancestor along with all the decendant.

group D and E together are paraphyletic to A. It excludes A subgorup.

Group D and E are polyphyletic to each other.

group C is monophyletic. It consists of ancestors along with  all decendant.

group A and B are polyphyletic. They share the character of D
