Problem 26.35

Part A

Problem 26.35 Part A Which cytosine in the following sense strand of DNA could cause the most damage to the organism if it were deaminated? ATG TCCCTA ATC 5'-Position Middle position 3"-Position Ser Ser Tyr Tyr Gln Thr Thr Lys Thr Lys Ala Asp O The first one. O The second one O The third one O The first and the second. O The first and the third O The second and the third All cytosines in the following sense strand of DNA could cause damage to the organism if they were deaminated O None cytosine in the following sense strand of DNA could cause damage to the organism if it were deaminated

Explanation / Answer

The First One

Sequence of Sense strand of DNA is

5' ATGTCGCTAATC 3'

3' TACAGCGATTAG 5' Anti sense strand

5' AUG UCG CUA AUC 3' mRNA with codons

Met Ser Leu Ileu Amino acids for the corresponding codons

Deamination of first cytosine(UCG = ser) leads to UUG which codes for Leucine

Deamination of second cytosine (CUA = Leu) leads to UUA which also codes for Leucine

Deamination of third cytosine (AUC = Ileu) leads to AUU which codes for same aminoacid that is Isoleucine

The protein structure is affected if the aminoacids sequence change as we observe in case of deamination of first cytosine but the sequence remain the same in case of second and third cytosine damination.
