Evolutions question: Albinism is due to a recessive, autosomal mutation. The frequency of albino squirrels is 4x10^-6 while heterozygous squirrels, which are tan colored (and are lighter than wild type squirrels) occur at frequency 0.004 assume the population in a mutation selection balance. a) what is the frequency of the albino allele? Show work b) if the mutation rate to new albino alleles is 10^-6 what is the reduction of fitness of the heterozygote? Evolutions question: Albinism is due to a recessive, autosomal mutation. Show work b) if the mutation rate to new albino alleles is 10^-6 what is the reduction of fitness of the heterozygote?Explanation / Answer
a) Let frequency of wild type be=p, frequency of albino=q
p+q=1 (based on mutation selection balance)
for 2 allele frquency, q2=4*10-6
single allele frequency for albino q=2*10-3
b)For frequency of 4*10-6, the tan colored (heterozygote) frequency is 0.004. For 10-6 as a new mutation rate the tan colored will be 0.001. Thus the reduction is 4 fold in terms of fitness.
