Question

ctice Question In the last few years, a new virus has emerged called middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). This virus was originally detected in a man from Egypt who is believed to have become infected from a bat. Research performed on this virus has shown that it infects non-ciliated bronchial epithelial cells. The virus has the ability to inhibit the production of Interferon by infected cells and therefore, invade immune responses. We wanted to see what genes this virus is regulating in infected cells that allows it to evade the immune system so we ran a differential display on infected cells (I) vs non-infected cells (N) and got the following results a. (2 pts) Are we isolating DNA, RNA, or protein for this experiment? b. (3 pts) Starting from the top of the gel, circle the first band that you might be interested in studying further and explain why you chose that one C. (3 pts) Continue moving down the gel and place a square around the next band that you might be interested in studying further and explain why you chose that one . . . d. (2 pts) Would the first band at the top of the gel be interesting to study and explain your answer? N I

Explanation / Answer

4. The first band at the top of the gel does not seem interesting as it is present in both non-infected and infected cells and might be one of the sequence which is involved in regular ‘housekeeping’ of the virus.
